THE DEAD MAN DIED, AFTER RUINING MY SCOOP

I am writing this to tell you of my deep remorse over my involvement in this unfortunate incident.

I’ve been accused of being insensitive, like when I sulked over being scooped by an explosion on campus which terrorized or injured hundreds of Cal students.

“If you really want to hear about it,” (Holden Caulfield) it all started when I boasted to an editor or two that I would shoot–from start to finish–the more than thirteen mile historic first Berkeley road race. I planned to do it on a road bike, while toting three cameras (I shot with all).

Berkeley’s first (and one man’s last) sanctioned road race–from start to finish, Nov. 24.

TELEGRAPH AVE. USA CHRISTMAS

A street this teeming with “street people” shouldn’t dim Christmas day, but dim it did.

Where have all the hippies gone?

Perhaps to People’s Park.

SQUISHY OPENING FOR LATEST ICE-CREAM CONTENDER

Rasputin music’s ice-cream opened squishy, Monday, with its chilly rival to Cream, an ice-cream avenue cult.

Soft openings usually are announced to precede a grand-opening. Rapsputin’s controversial ice-cream challenge to its across-the-street rival–in the midst of Telegraph’s holiday street fair–was more of a happening than an opening.

PEOPLE’S PARK COPS TAKE AIM AT MACHETE-WIELDING MAN

According to an eyewitness, a machete-wielding man lashed out, Saturday, at three street kids and their dogs in People’s Park.

Machete-man grazed his victims with the dull side of his weapon before four cops, guns aimed at him, arrived.

In the ensuing melee, the attacker and several People’s Park regulars were arrested.

MACHETE MAN UPDATE

As a key arrest from the melee in People’s Park returned to Telegraph Avenue, Monday, and additional witnesses came forward, I am able to re-construct the hacking episode.

NOT FAR FROM GOURMET GHETTO

Less than a mile from the lower North side Gourmet Ghetto squats Telegraph Avenue’s thrift-strip, a student ghetto food fairway preying on the nascent taste buds of teenagers.

Teley food and prices are not far from weird. You can get the only Ramen-burger outside of Manhattan (the bun is constructed of Ramen) and a $5 (plus) paper cup of fried rice.

A cup of soup in a paper cup is also $5. But you can get a toasted cheese with that for $7.99.

You can get a $5 slice at a new Manhattan Pizzeria. Two upcoming slice-spots are preparing to open; four slice choices.
